What do you think the ‘hair’ on unshucked corn is for?
Someone recently asked me this, I obviously do not know.
And to make matters funnier, I thought my guess was rational; “idk, maybe irrigation?”
So your fun fact of the week…
TURNS OUT - the hairs catch pollen on the outside through wind, and then the hairs run it into the corn and it helps create each kernel.
Pretty wild right?!
Even cooler: Farmers will ‘detassle’ corn (aka cut off the ends that look like hair) to manage cross-pollination and ensure corn is only ‘reproducing’ with the same type of corn.
This may sound extreme - but not all corn is sweet corn, some are used for starches and oils - which are much tougher to eat raw.
Well, now that you have a fun fact for your next BBQ party (just in time for Labor Day weekend!), I must tell you we have a comedy show on 9/5 and you will not want to miss this.
