I also dive into an interesting way to look at goal setting and why we buy wrapping paper.
Boston has 3 upcoming workout classes and NYC will be taking a breather for the first 2 weeks of 2024, but we will be coming in hot after that.
More art classes, recess, workouts and movements, and relationship building for 2024.
I will see y’all on the flip side.

Different Paths to Success, but a clear path to failure.
A few weeks ago I wrote about a great podcast that broke down some takeaways from Charlie Munger’s life — I want to hone in on one of them.
Which is Charlie’s philosophy on goal setting.
It’s simple.
And because It’s simple I am going to use it for setting my 2024 goals and creating a framework on how to go about hitting them all.
SO - here it is.
Munger’s philosophy is there is no clear path to success, but there is a clear path to failure.
He would outline the path to failure, take the bullet points, and just opt to do the opposite. The example used was from when Munger was a military meteorologist.
He didn’t know how to be the best, but he knew the objective was to keep pilots safe.
& instead of trying to learn all the great how-to tactics, he looked at what needed to be avoided for the pilot’s sake — he needed to predict snow, ice, and fog really well.
If he did those three things well, then he was bound to be successful.
I love this framework.
It helps clear the path for clear action, and it leans into a James Clear quote I love from another Pod I highly recommend:
You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.
So - let 2024 be the year of systems and habit-making.
Wrapping Paper as a Business
Maybe it’s my obsession with ideas and money —
But.
Holidays just really have me question:
“Why do I pay for this and who thought of it?”
Like, wrapping paper.
It is expensive, single-use, and just for decoration. Yet, we all buy it — I do so gladly, may I add.
So here are my fun finance facts about wrapping paper (because I ended up down a wrapping paper rabbit hole)…
In the US alone, we spend $2.6B on decorative paper — Wrapping paper, tissue paper.. it adds up to 85 million tons of paper products. (the equivalent of 22 full-grown elephants, just saying.)
Wrapping gifts is not a new practice. In Japan, there is a centuries-old practice of reusable cloth wrapping that Western countries adapted with ‘freak’ paper (tissue paper).
In 1917, The Hall Brothers in Kansas City, Missouri ran out of their tissue paper one year and placed some French paper used for envelopes in the store so they wouldn’t lose out on sale — It sold out immediately.
By 1919 The Hall’s confirmed these sales weren’t flukes and started purposely designing wrapping papers and packaging goods.
Oh... And by the way:
The Hall Brothers are Joyce and Rollie Hall of Hallmark.
Pretty neat story.
A friend I met through Lime Social Club, Glennon, wrote this piece and honestly I just loved it. She shared it online and I wanted to pass it along. I sent it to a few friends but I think we should all read it for no other reason than it’s a poetic piece. Read it here.
