The Annual Look into Sumo Oranges

Niche obsessions are one of my favorite personality traits, especially when you realize you’re not alone.

A few years ago, I developed a deep and slightly concerning obsession with Sumo Citrus oranges. Not “I like them.” I was, and AM, obsessed.

I once wrote an entire newsletter breaking down my weekly spend on them… roughly 25% of my grocery budget during winter. This is not a joke. I ran the numbers.

And the obsession is still thriving. I posted about them on my story this past Sunday and got over 15 replies like “omg I LOVE these,” “the best,” and, truly unhinged behavior… two separate photos from people also mid-orange.

Nothing bonds strangers faster than a premium citrus obsession. Have you tried them???? If not, go spend the $3.50 and enjoy a life changing orange.

ALSO, If you aren’t here for the orange content, we have a full list of activations + events below! Check them out!

xx, Caite

This houseplant is worth $54,000

So, I was at book club, as one does as a late-20s NYC woman.

Anyway.

One of the girls casually mentions she’s making $70 a day watering a family’s bonsai trees while they’re on vacation.

That’s $490 for a week.
To water plants.

Naturally, my brain short-circuited.

Here’s the kicker:
They have 21 bonsai trees.

My first thought: How do you even fit that many in an apartment?
My second: Why are these plants guarded like heirlooms?

Turns out, bonsai trees range wildly in value—from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. Some have even sold for millions. The biggest factor? Age.

And this family? They figured out the system.

They scan the New York Times obituary section, cross-check estate sales, and hunt for bonsais that are priced low simply because the owner passed away. Sometimes the plants are listed. Sometimes they gamble.

They typically pay around 10% of market value.

Then they wait.

They house the trees, pay for minimal upkeep, and let time do the work. Because as bonsais age, their value compounds. Slowly. Quietly.

Eventually? Those plants could sell for five figures.

It’s plant arbitrage.
And it’s… kind of brilliant.

So consider this your sign:
If you own a bonsai, you might want to check what it’s actually worth.

Because apparently, this might be a better bet than the lottery, it might be $54,000.
